Ghazal shayari is the music of repetition, every sher in a ghazal ends on the same radif, and a fresh qafiya rhymes its way there each time. The 30 couplets on this page are written exactly like that, each one a standalone sher that could open a ghazal, with the radif and qafiya audible the moment you read it aloud.
As everywhere in the library, the Hindi script comes first and the Roman version under it serves readers who want ghazal shayari in english letters. If the parts of a sher are new to you, read the craft lesson on the sher shayari page first, and keep 2 line urdu shayari handy for quicker, lighter couplets.

Uske lehje mein jo mithaas ghuli rehti hai,
Har dua usi ke naam khuli rehti hai.
Usko dekha to har ghazal yaad aayi,
Misre bhoole hue, mukammal yaad aayi.
Mohabbat mein hisaab achchha nahi lagta,
Jo tol ke mile, wo sachcha nahi lagta.
Ye dil ke qaafile ab aur kahaan utre.

Ik muskaan pe qurbaan har tayyaari.

Hum wahin khade hain, mod chhoda nahi.
Hijr ki raaton ka lamba safar hota hai,
Chaand bhi jaagta hai, jab asar hota hai.
Toot ke bhi humne shikaayat nahi likhi,
Ghazalon mein bhi uski adaawat nahi likhi.
Aansu gira nahi, bas palkon pe ruka hai,
Ye dard bhi kitna adab se jhuka hai.
Uski gali se ab guzarna nahi hota,
Yaadon ke shehar mein thehrna nahi hota.
Shikwa kiya to rishte ka bharam tootega,
Chup rahe to apna hi dil roothega.

Har sher mein ik alag kahaani hai,
Radeef saath chale, qaafiya raah dikhaaye,
Ye mehfilon ki sabse puraani nishaani hai.
How a Ghazal Works, Sher by Sher
A ghazal is a chain of five or more sher that share one sound scheme but not one story. The rules are few and strict.
- Every sher ends on the same radif, a repeated word or phrase.
- Just before the radif comes the qafiya, a word that rhymes afresh in every sher.
- The opening sher is the matla, which rhymes on both of its lines, exactly how the couplets on this page are built.
- The closing sher is the maqta, where the poet signs off with a takhallus.
- All sher sit in one beher, a shared metre, which is why a ghazal can be sung.
The surprise of the form is independence. Each sher is complete alone, one can be about ishq, the next about ghalatfehmi, the next about the chaand, and the radif stitches them into one garment. Couplet 30 above says this in verse. For the vocabulary itself, the worked example on the sher shayari page labels every part on a live couplet.
Difference Between Ghazal and Shayari
The difference between ghazal and shayari confuses many readers, and it is honestly simple. Shayari is the umbrella, all of this poetry, every form, every mood. A ghazal is one specific form under that umbrella, a set of sher sharing radif, qafiya and metre. So every ghazal is shayari, but a lot of shayari, like free two line pieces, is not a ghazal. When a search says ghazal sher o shayari in hindi, it usually wants single couplets lifted from the ghazal tradition, shown in Hindi script, which is what this page serves.
Spelling wanders too. Gazal ki shayari and ghazal shayari mean the same thing, gazal is just how many of us type it. Searches for gazal hindi shayari land on these same couplets.
Where These Ghazal Couplets Fit
Because each sher stands alone, you can lift any one of them for the moment at hand.
| Moment | Section to open | Mood tags |
|---|---|---|
| Late night scroll | Raat, Chaand aur Tanhai | Yaadein, Gehra |
| Missing someone | Dard aur Hijr | Dard, Khamosh |
| Caption for a couple photo | Ishq couplets | Ishq, Rumani |
| Monday morning | Umeed aur Sukoon | Umeed, Sukoon |
To go deeper into the roots of the form, the Mirza Ghalib and Jaun Elia pages introduce two masters the ghazal world still reveres, and the Shayari Library home holds the wider Urdu collection.
